Washington Nationals’ Ivan Rodriguez likely to remain back-up – MLB Update
Agent Scott Boras is content on securing the most lucrative deals for his clients. With the free agent market ripe, the agent believes that it is his time to project his clients as the best in the Majors and thus ensure that they get deals which are the
best on the circuit.
Earlier, Boras articulated that the market for Prince Fielder and Albert Pujols is entirely segregated and teams should not compare both players. He asserted that Fielder is younger than Pujols and is coming off from one of his best seasons in the Majors.
Pujols, on the other hand, won the World Series with the Cardinals this past season, but age is not on his side. Although still in his early 30s, Boras believes that Pujols’ prime is over.
Now, the agent is looking to clinch a possible extension for Ivan Rodriguez with the Washington Nationals. Boras flew to Milwaukee so that he has maximum time to have talks with general managers of various teams. All MLB general managers have gathered in
Milwaukee for meetings and Boras wants to make full use of this opportunity.
Rodriguez has made a name for himself as a back-up catcher and Boras has asserted that he will talk to Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo in this regard. Boras added that back-up catchers and quality infielders are getting early offers from teams and this is one chance
which Rodriguez can capitalise on. Ivan is satisfied with the ballclub and has voiced his desire of re-signing with the Nationals.
While Boras is projecting his client as a back-up catcher, Rodriguez does not seem to be comfortable with this assertion. With only 156 hits shy of joining the list of legends that have surpassed 3000, Rodriguez believes he has done enough to earn a regular
playing spot in the team. However, Rodriguez will have to accept the role of being a back-up if he wants to prolong his stay at Washington.
With Joe Mauer known for his injury concerns, the Minnesota Twins are looking for a back-up catcher as well and Rodriguez is on their radar. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how things unfold in this case as time progresses.
