Washington Nationals’ Jayson Werth shines amidst boos from Philadelphia Phillies’ fans-MLB Update
Playing against the club he was part of once, Washington Nationals’ outfielder Jayson Werth entered the field on Wednesday amidst boos from Philadelphia Phillies’ fans.
Interestingly, he did enough at the plate that his performance can be considered a befitting response to some of the unruly fans sitting in the stadium.
He ran well and struck hits and in the end he played an important role in the Nationals 8-4 crush of the Phillies.
Ever since joining the team after recovering from injury, Werth has been extremely impressive. He has struck home-runs and produced incredible hits. Above all, his speed while running through the bases has been phenomenal. He currently is carrying out the
leadoff job for the Nationals.
What makes his role significant for the team is that he is helping the rest of the batters in the line-up earn greater number of RBIs. One of the reasons why the Nationals’ third baseman Ryan Zimmerman has accumulated an amazing total of RBIs in the season
is his running speed.
Werth along with Bryce Harper has been reaching home-plate frequently following hits coming off from Zimmerman at the plate.
Commenting on the hostile reception he faced from the Phillies’ fans on Wednesday, Werth has stated that they are emotionally attached to their club. Far from taking offence, he believes it is good for the game if fans express association with their teams
openly.
“I’ve played a lot of games here and I’m fairly aware of how the fans can be and the way they do things around here,” Werth explained. “I’m not the first guy to get booed nor will I be the last. It’s just part of the game that makes for exciting baseball.
These people are passionate. I’ve heard a lot here. Someone said today that when Roy [Halladay] got chased the other day that he got booed off the field. I’m not sure if that’s true or not, but it’s not surprising.”
Werth has a major role to play in the post-season. He will be looking to keep his current form going and producing runs at the start of the innings.
It will be interesting to see as to what extent he can support the team offensively.
