Washington Nationals’ outfielder Mark DeRosa recites statements of Teddy Roosevelt to motivate his team-mates, who after losing two games against the St. Louis Cardinals had their morale down before Thursday’s match.
Using the statements of the former US president Roosevelt, he tried to inspire players.
Roosevelt faced so many hurdles in his run up to becoming the president. Despite all the obstacles he came across, he never gave in and eventually he went on to achieve his purpose.
DeRosa knew that the Nationals are on the brink of getting eliminated from the season. He wanted that the Nationals to go all-out in the fourth game and clinch the victory so that they stay alive in the season.
The best way that he thought to pump up the players and increase their motivation level was to tell them how Roosevelt met challenges in his life and showed perseverance in the face of hopeless circumstances.
His ploy apparently has worked as the Nationals defeated the Cardinals despite the fact their starter Ross Detwiler was not an ideal pitcher to start such a high profile game.
“The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood … who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that
his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat,” Mark DeRosa said.
The Nationals have posted a tremendous win-loss record in the regular season. They have entered the playoffs with a lot of expectations from the fans who want to see their team achieving glory in the season.
Only area they can be concerned about is the lack of experience of most of their players in the post-season. It is for the same reason that their hitters have not been up to the mark since the beginning of the playoffs.
As the Nationals have tied the series, they will be looking to clinch victory in the last match.
It will be interesting to see as to how they perform in the final contest of the National League Division Series.
