Washington Nationals’ Roger Bernadina leaves the field as he endures hamstring strain - MLB Update
Outfielder Roger Bernadina suffers a hamstring injury during the game while he attempted to traverse bases on seeing a passed ball and tried to get to the target as quickly as possible. He was taken off the park by the trainer after it happened. There has
been no official statement emerging as yet about his disabled list stint or whether he will be put on it at all.
Bernadina had the best chance to play right throughout the season and assert his credentials for becoming a permanent member in the line-up. Even the Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson had hinted that Bernadina will be given opportunities frequently.
Given a shaky state of the Nationals’ offence, his existence in the line-up was not insignificant. He has all what it takes to become a reliable option, when some hitters are injured or are going through a lean period.
His numbers so far in the season speak volumes about his ability to turn out an important link in the success of an offence.
He has posted a .247 batting average in the season, with two home-runs and 12 RBIs. While it was not the best of the performances, considered in the context of relative mediocrity of the Nationals’ offence, it is reflective of an excellent show on plate.
Bernadina is extremely hopeful that he will be back soon. Stating that his condition is far different now from what it appeared as the incident took place, he hinted, he will get rid of the strain within few days.
“I couldn’t bend my knee when it happened, but now it’s okay,” Bernadina said. “Stuff like that happens. That’s how it is. I hope tomorrow it will be better.”
As per the trainer, the blow on his hamstring is of mild nature and will not trouble him that much. Based on this, one can believe, there is little possibility of him being sent to DL.
With few days of rest, Bernadina can have better measurement of where the injury stands and whether it can allow him to resume the play anytime soon.
One will hope that he escapes the hamstring strain at the earliest and steadies his campaign for 2012 regular season.
