Washington Nationals’ Roger Bernadina looking to use more speed this season
The Washington Nationals are hard at work in Viera, Florida. The Major League Baseball club is looking to perform better than most of the competition in the National League East Division. The club has been unlucky in recent years as they’ve come fifth in
the past six years.
Outfielder Roger Bernadina is looking to utilise his speed for more runs during the regular league campaign to improve his team’s standing.
The Nationals want more chances to bag runs in the competition. Like Brett Gardner for the New York Yankees, Bernadina is looking to bunt more for the club. His speed has been the focal point of his star power in the club and has left many fans wanting more
from the ball player.
Bernadina played almost a complete season in the big leagues in 2010. During his tenure on the squad, Bernadina bagged 11 home runs and 47 RBIs. The player also managed to post a hitting average of .247.
Speaking on the issue, hitting coach Rick Eckstein said, “He has the ability to be such a versatile player,” Eckstein said. “Gosh, he can wreak havoc in so many ways. Mickey Mantle would drop the drag bunt down, so I think that is something Roger can definitely
utilise. It would be a huge weapon because the opponents would not know how to defend him. It’s like, ‘Is he going to sit back and hit one down our throats or is he going to drop one down and use his speed?’”
For Bernadina, the goal is simple. He plans to improve his singles and score more of them while his on-base percentage gains a good number of base points. “I want to push it this year,” Bernadina said. “I want to get my average up in the end too. The little
things will make me better. I'm definitely going to do it. I feel like I can bunt more.”
Roger Bernadina went on to say that sometimes, the opposition makes a mistake and he gets his chance to score. He is just fast enough to capitalise on the opportunity.
