Washington Nationals’ Wilson Ramos will vie with Kurt Suzuki for a spot next year - MLB Update
Working his way to a complete rehabilitation from knee injury suffered in the last season, Wilson Ramos is eager to assume his responsibilities as catcher next year.
As per the reports, he is recovering fast. However, uncertainty surrounds his playing regularly for the team during the 2013 Major League season.
Kurt Suzuki will be his competitor for the job of catching. Most probably, he will be a part of the Opening Day roster as opposed to Ramos.
This is due to the fact that even as Ramos gains fitness, he will take some time to get his form back. After all, returning to baseball activities after a great number of months will require a new beginning from his part.
Certainly, Spring Training is a platform for Ramos to earn confidence of the officials. If he can play regularly with comfort, the chances are that he joins the campaign of the Nationals at any time of the next year.
Ramos is arguably the best catching talent around in the Majors. It was glaringly visible during the last season when he led the offence of the team with mammoth home-runs and regular quality shows at the plate.
At the time of injuries to main players, he stood up for the club, counter-balancing the impact of their absence.
Before he suffered an injury, he was continuing his expedition in a way as if he was going to earn a series of laurels at the end of the season.
His sudden ouster from the season due to knee injury was a setback for Washington, fortunately they recovered quickly thanks to the comeback of main players into the team.
The part of the reason why Ramos was not missed much was the entry of Suzuki. Acquired as a part of the trade with Oakland Athletics, he immediately asserted his credentials as an amazing hitter as well as a catcher.
For the same reason, manager Davey Johnson is content about considering him a better option for the 2013 season instead of relying on Ramos.
"Suzuki will probably start the season at No. 1, making sure that Ramos is comfy," said Johnson.
The Nationals have two quality catchers in their ranks. It will be interesting to see how they make use of them and draw the best out of them.
