Washington Nationals cling on to Carl Pavano as decision time nears
The winter season is about to end and with a month more left until the spring training session starts off in 2011, the chase is on to sign the best players from the free agency. One club in particular that has been very active, this year, is none other than
the Washington Nationals. The club has been setting up the roster for young prospects, who will come to the side in the next few years. The ball team has a lot of expectations from the fans and it all boils down to planning.
The Washington Nationals recently made the headlines when they acquired Jayson Werth from free agency. The veteran’s move to the Nationals sent shockwaves across the baseball world as top teams failed to sign the former Philadelphia Phillies man. The player’s
move has spear headed the assessment that the club is looking to make the necessary changes now. Top quality players groom around experienced professionals and that seems to be the general idea when one looks at Bryce Harper.
Harper was acquired last season when the First Draft Picks were made. The team under general manager Mike Rizzo is looking to change the team’s outlook and it seems his policies are pushing the objective towards the right direction. The club made the necessary
changes at the start of the vacation period when the jerseys were replaced with new edition uniforms. The brand reimaging scheme seems to be paying dividends and as one may say, the club is turning a new leaf.
The team is looking for a starting pitcher however. Their pursuit has landed them on the doorstep of Carl Pavano. The former 34-year-old Minnesota Twins pitcher is set to decide on where he wants to play next season. The Nationals have done a lot to align
themselves with the player and it seems they’re looking to land the experienced ball thrower. The objective would be to provide cover for the team’s hitters and prospects.
Pavano has been pursued by many teams in both the American League and the National League. His figures from last season provide an optimistic overview of his role in any club. The veteran posted an earning runs average of just 3.75. In addition to that,
he won 17 fixtures, while losing 11. Pavano is a daunting figure in any rotation and his 117 strikeouts from last season provides the proof needed to certify that statement.
