Washington Nationals defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 – MLB Update
Jayson Werth hit a three-run homer on Monday, August 22 to help the Washington Nationals beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-1 at Nationals Park.
Werth was assisted by Ross Detwiler who only gave up a run in over 6.2 innings, as Jason made it a fascinating game with his performance.
"Being here long enough, I've settled in and I'm getting comfortable and finding my zone," said Werth, whose 2-for-4 performance upped his batting average to .229. "Unfortunately, it's taken this long."
Faced by left-handed Joe Saunders, Werth executed the hits with phenomenal fashion. "For me, if my swing's good, I should be able to hit lefties good and righties good," he said. "If it's not good, I could pitch and probably get me out sometimes."
Werth is one of the highly paid players of the Nationals with over $126-million-dollar contract. "I said maybe three weeks ago that he was coming along. Every day, I see more of Jayson Werth," Washington manager Davey Johnson said. “It’s about time to come
out."
Monday’s game kicked off with Ross Detwiler’s extraordinarily strong pitches, barely giving up any hit to the Arizona Diamondbacks’ hitters. While Joe Saunders, on the other hand, failed to contain the Washington Nationals’ offence.
Jonny Gomes singled to right-centre to score the first run for the Washington Nationals, giving them an early lead in the game. With Ross Detwiler pitching some good innings, the Nationals consolidated their position on the game with a 1-0 lead.
Come bottom of the fourth and the Nationals’ Jayson Werth did the expected, as he took Saunders to task and homered to right to take up the lead to 4-0 for the Nationals as the Diamondbacks found it increasingly difficult to rise up to the expectations of
their fans.
Although Joe Saunders’ being expensive did not prompt a change in the pitching line-up as he kept pitching till the sixth, Ross Detwiler allowed a run to Henry Blanco as he homered to left to bring the Nationals’ lead down to 4-1.
However, Henry Rodriguez pitched the remainder of the inning with speed pace, keeping the lead intact. Ryan Mattheus went for an equally strong eighth, with the leading favouring the Nationals, keeping the Diamondbacks in deep flux.
With the first of four-game series’ result going the Nationals way, Drew Storen was called to pitch the last for the team. The closer remained effective, pitching perfectly to turn the 4-1 lead into an emphatic win for the Nationals.
Even though the Diamondbacks are way ahead of the Nationals with 69 wins and the Nationals behind with 62 wins, it would be interesting to see how the two teams take on each other in the second game on Tuesday.
