Washington Nationals defeat Cincinnati Reds 3-1 – MLB Update
Pitching 5.2 innings and not allowing any run, Jordan Zimmermann helped Washington Nationals beat the Cincinnati Reds by 3-1 on Thursday, August 18 at Nationals Park.
The Reds had remained successful in last game with 2-1 victory, but with the victory that Jordan Zimmermann brought, the Nationals won the three-game series by 2-1. Zimmermann merely gave up six pitches and also struck-out two in over five innings that he
pitched.
Asked for how long will he pitch, he said, "I don't know how it's going to be," Zimmermann said. "I'm going to keep pitching until they tell me to stop -- one or two more starts -- I'm not sure. I watched for a whole year. I think I can handle a month."
There was also a question pertaining to his putting an early end his pitching spell. "It was getting pretty late, and I was getting pretty tired toward the end there," Zimmermann said. "I want to stay out there 120 pitches if I can."
The Thursday’s game, however, had other highlights too. Bronson Arroyo was equally strong when it came to limiting the Washington Nationals’ offence. The Cincinnati Reds starter, like his fellow Johnny Cueto, was throwing some remarkable innings.
It was right into the fifth inning, after both Jordan Zimmermann and Bronson Arroyo’s uninterrupted spell, that Jesus Flores hit a homer to left centre, giving the Washington Nationals 1-0 lead in the seemingly drought-like game.
As the lead came to the Washington Nationals’ way, Jordan Zimmermann pitched the fifth and was relieved by Mattheus in the middle. Bronson Arroyo, on the other hand, failed to stop the runs flow coming off the Nationals’ batters.
Jonny Gomes had a two-run single to triple the lead for the Nationals in the 3-hit two-run sixth inning. Henry Rodriguez was dispatched to pitch the seventh for the Nationals. Brandon Phillips of the Reds scored the first run to bring down the lead to 3-1.
However, Tyler Clippard tossed some of the best pitches of the night in the eighth inning and made it a shut-out to maintain the 3-1 lead for the Washington Nationals. While Nick Masset pitched a shut-out eighth against the Nationals.
It was Drew Storen, coming as a closer for the Nationals, whose magically strong spell left the Reds in tantrums. Allowing no run in the inning, he turned the 3-1 lead into an outright win and concluded the series with 2-1 win for the Washington Nationals.
The National put in a brilliant performance as they managed to take a must win victory against the Reds. Cincinnati will be looking to improve their efforts before their next match-up.
