Washington Nationals defeat Florida Marlins 5-3 – MLB Update
First baseman Adam LaRoche and out-fielder Jayson Werth both played their role by hitting home-runs to help Washington Nationals defeat Florida Marlins 5-3 at Sun Life Stadium, Florida, on April 7.
During last year, the Nationals broke seven continuous losing streaks against the same rivals, the Marlins. They had the worst record of 12-33 over the Marlins in the last four years.
LaRoche struck his homer in a more conventional way in the 11th inning against the Marlin’s closer Edward Mujica. LaRoche had three runs for 23 at-bats, including one RBI. He was satisfied with his hitting average as it was .167 after this game.
Sean Burnett had 21 continuous strike-out innings since the middle of last year. He had the second save of his game in the 11th inning. Todd Coffey threw an ideal 10th inning, as he was expelled from the last game due to violation of
a ball-strike rule.
Werth hit his home-run into third base, as it was considered as his first homer since inking a seven-year contract with the Nationals. Werth had some views upon his last game performance and said, “I don't know what I'm hitting. It doesn't feel bad at all.
I think that's because I'm hitting some balls hard. I guess the only safe place to hit it right now is in the seats, it feels like.”
The four relievers for the Nationals had a wonderful day as they threw six scoreless innings in a game. One of the relievers, Tyler Clippard said, “There are a lot of good arms down there. That's what you're going to see all year.”
The Nationals got success by the combined effort of each hitter in posting runs. Washington’s third baseman Ryan Zimmerman completed his single with one-out in the 11th inning. The batters for the Nationals had an average of .140, which is considered
to be very low and they posted just 19 runs in the last games of the season.
The Marlins’ pitchers also threw well as they offered just two unearned runs with 12 strike-outs. They had one run for 11 at-bats with the runners. The Marlins’ manager Edwin Rodriguez said, “We had chances to score more runs but we didn't come through.”
Only first two batters from the Marlins were able to score a run. After that, the Nationals’ starting pitcher John Lannan threw some impressive balls and permitted just three runs in more than five innings. The Marlins’ bull-pen session had no score in over
12 innings in the current season.
The Nationals put in a tremendous effort as they managed to restrict the Marlins’ offence throughout the game. The Marlins will be looking to improve their performance for their next match-up.
