Washington Nationals defeat Houston Astros 7-4 in Spring Training - MLB Update
Starter John Lannan helps Washington Nationals record a 7-4 win against Houston Astros at Space Coast Stadium in Melbourne, Florida in their Grapefruit League contest on March 26, 2012.
After slumping earlier, Nationals are starting to return to winning ways. Two consecutive wins, first against New York Mets and second against Astros, explain their ability to thwart any side. Best part was the fact that they won by a large margin in terms
of score (12-0 against Mets and 7-4 today).
First inning finished off scoreless, starter from both sides perhaps were fresh and thus were too accurate in their throws. In second as both sides posted one score, it was third inning when Nationals took two run lead. Afterwards, in the fifth and sixth,
the Nationals just substantiated their lead with three and one run respectively.
Continuing from his amazing last game outing, Nationals' centre fielder Roger Bernadina had another incredible day. While facing three at-bats, he slammed one homer, added two RBIs along with one run he completed.
Right fielder Jayson Werth, who hit a massive homer in last game, struggled to replicate the same performance. As he came across three at-bats, he managed connection with none, going hitless.
By his impressive show today, Lannan has justified his role of a fifth starter during the season for the Nationals. As he spent five innings on the mound, he took five strike-outs. He walked only for once and gave up two earned runs. The fact he was hit
just for two times in huge number of pitches he threw toward plate reflects his ability to play on batters’ mind intelligently.
As regard to Astros, Jordan Lyles, their starter was hammered eight hits in over four innings he stayed on the mound. Although he managed five strike-outs, five runs including three earned runs and a walk he gave up were enough to harden for batters to chase
down an ever increasing lead by Washington.
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson has a reason to feel good as he can see his players stepping up on right moments.
Couple of weeks ago he was busy streamlining offensive front and in particular he accorded special attention on Ian Desmond and Danny Espinosa, the results have started to surface, he can now expect a better performance during the season.
