Washington Nationals defeat New York Mets 6-2 as they record their third regular season win - MLB
Starter Dillon Gee gave up four runs as the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 6-2 on April 10, 2012 at Citi Field in New York during their regular season clash.
Immediately bouncing back from their last game defeat, Nationals restored their pride by recording a thumping victory. Their starter, Ross Detwiler, was spot on and shortstop Ian Desmond was as superb as he has been throughout Spring Training.
Jayson Werth who sent the ball out of the park on numbers of occasions in Spring Training had to kick start in the regular season. Not at his best in the last few games, Werth launched himself in the game.
While he faced five at-bats, he connected four hits, improving his season batting average to .263.
"I feel like I've swung the bat pretty good since the middle of January with nothing to show for it," Werth said. "It's not how you start, it's how you finish."
It was not a good day for the Mets. Coming off three wins in a row, they entered the game high in confidence. They not just suffered defeat in the game, as their third baseman David Wright also got his right pinkie swollen, putting him off for an indefinite time period.
"I couldn't grip a bat today -- pretty easy decision today," Wright said. "It's always frustrating to miss time, kind of breaks up the momentum we had."
Nationals’ starter Detwiler threw a scoreless spell of five innings, striking-out six and walking one. Both Daniel Murphy and Jason Bay fell to his throws.
Mets witnessed a poor show from their hitters. Second baseman Murphy missed four at-bats without scoring a hit. Similarly Lucas Duda did not get a hit in four at-bats.
Only their third baseman Ronny Cedeno achieved three hits in four at-bats.
With the win that the Nationals got, reiterated of what they are going to be in the season. With regards to the Mets, their confidence will be low for the moment.
This is the time for the Mets to evaluate themselves correctly and see what went wrong in the game. Only this way can they reinstate the momentum they had before this game.
