Washington Nationals defeat Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 – MLB Update
Washington Nationals put in a brilliant performance as they defeated Philadelphia Phillies 7-4 at Nationals Park, Washington on Tuesday, April 12.
Jayson Werth, who played for the Phillies for years, played an impressive game for the Nationals to enable his new team to win comfortably over the Phillies.
The game commenced with Livan Hernandez pitching for Washington. Shane Victorino of Philadelphia was the first to face him. Placido Polanco followed who was succeeded by Jimmy Rollins. The inning remained scoreless as Joe Blanton came to pitch for Philadelphia.
He was faced by Ian Desmond, Rick Ankiel and Jayson Werth.
The second inning was an opportune time for Ryan Howard to open the account for the Phillies. He took on Hernandez and homered to left to score the first run for his team. Phillies could not maintain the lead for long as Danny Espinosa of the Nationals capitalised
on Joe Blanton who was pitching for Phillies. Espinosa hit a sacrifice fly to centre as Wilson Ramos scored.
The scored remained levelled until the fourth inning when the Nationals stormed into the game with renewed energy. Blanton was first punished by Ramos, as he doubled to left centre where Werth scored, inviting boos by his once die-hard Phillies’ fans now
against him for playing on behalf of their rival team. Jerry Hariston Jr, then singled to left where Ramos scored following which Hernandez sacrificed to the pitcher and Laynce Nix scored. This additional three runs gave a 4-1 lead.
Werth who was perhaps ordained to shine in this match emerged in the fifth inning where he homered to left scoring another run for the team. His score further fueled anger among the crowd who kept booing. If that alone was not enough to fill the crowd with
displeasure, National’s Ramos took David Herndon to task, as he struck him and walked for Rick Ankiel to score, making the lead 6-1. Philadelphia tried to bounce back in the eighth inning when Raul Ibanez and Carlos Ruiz had two successive hits, adding two
runs to the team’s score, reducing the National’s lead to 6-3.
Alex Cora of Washington hit Danys Baez to score the seventh run for the team, strengthening the grip of Washington. Philadelphia put a last ditch effort in the 9th inning to stage a come-back in the game, but failed. Polanco singled to center
where Wilson Valdez scored. Jimmy Rollins failed to strike Sean Burnett of Washington, as the Phillies were out of the game, resulting in 7-4 victory for the Nationals.
