Washington Nationals defeat San Francisco Giants 2-0 – MLB Update
The Washington Nationals played some decent baseball as they beat the San Francisco Giants 2-0 at Nationals Park, Washington on Monday, May 2.
Tom Gorzelanny had eight spectacular innings where he let only three hits pass him by. The Giants’ line-up was already struggling so when Gorzelanny unleashed his excellent pitching, it was all just too much for the Giants to cope with.
Drew Storen went out to pitch in the ninth inning and was successful in securing his sixth save in equal chances. He finished of the game that lasted just a couple of minutes above the two hour mark, which made this particular game one of the fastest nine
inning game in Major League Baseball this season.
Madison Bumgarner retired 12 of Washington’s batters that came out and was successful in not allowing any earned run till the seventh inning where he unfortunately allowed two unearned runs. In total he gave up four hits. Bumgarner has pitched merely above
average in his last couple of starts but still has a long way to go. He hasn’t had any wins to his name till now. In his first four starts he received just two runs per game and the Giants haven’t managed to score a single run in his last pair of outings.
This was the third game out of the six played where they were shut-out and twice out of the three times was in their horrible series against Washington.
Adam LaRoche is currently in a one for 23 slump. Riggleman said, "I talked to Adam, and we both agreed this would be a good day to take a step back."
The Giants have continuously had problems at the plate. Out of the last 11 games the Giants played they have terribly lost all of them which is very unbecoming of the reigning World Series Champions. "We're awful right now," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We
know it."
The Nationals scored both times in the seventh inning. Michael Morse singled towards the centre and Wilson Ramos scored as Ian Desmond moved to second base. Later, Hairston doubled towards right centre of the field and Desmond scored as Morse effectively
moved himself to the third base. The Nationals took a comfortable victory against the Giants in the end.
It will be interesting to see how long the Nationals can carry their winning momentum into their next series. The Giants were unable to get anything from their offence and struggled throughout the game. The team has not been performing and losing against
some of the less competitive teams in the League. San Francisco are not playing like World Champions and are looking to improve their game play before their next series.
