Washington Nationals edge out New York Mets 5-4 as Bryce Harper scores triple in the tenth-MLB
Outfielder Bryce Harper and third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman lead the Washington Nationals to 5-4 victory in the tenth against the New York Mets at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. in the first game of the three match series on July 17, 2012.
The Nationals came back rushing into the game after allowing the Mets to reach close to the victory. From the start, a series of scoreless innings were witnessed.
However, from the fifth onward the Nationals began leading. Keeping the Mets quiet from the other end, they were increasing their lead slowly.
Meanwhile, New York bounced back, with three runs in the ninth, taking Washington aback. Since it was the last inning, the Nationals had little time to reclaim their lead.
Therefore, during this time, it was felt that the Mets will go on to win the game by keeping the Nationals quiet in the last inning.
However, the latter did not give up as they tied the score by adding one run in the ninth.
Still a lot of excitement was left in the game as the tenth inning saw an amazing display of mastery from both sides. As soon as New York restored the lead in the tenth, it was blown right in the same inning by Washington. Thus, the latter surged to an incredible
win.
In the last inning, Harper’s contribution was decisive. A triple that he struck toward deep right during such a crucial stage of the game helped the Nationals immensely.
Meanwhile, New York manager Terry Collins was disappointed on having missed such a golden opportunity to beat the Nationals. He looks forward to see best possible results in the upcoming games in the series.
"There's some guys that are really upset in the other room, and they should be," Terry Collins said. "It's time to reach down inside and pull out whatever you've got left and make something out of the remainder of this trip."
Meanwhile, from the pitching department, the Nationals’ starter Ross Detwiler threw an epic spell of seven innings. However, their relief pitcher Tyler Clippard was unimpressive on Tuesday. He gave up three runs as he brought the Mets to the brink of a stunning
victory.
The fact the closer showed signs of decline on Tuesday, Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson will be seriously considering changes in this respect.
