Washington Nationals edge past New York Mets 3-2 – MLB Update
The Washington Nationals replicated the score line of the previous game to defeat the New York Mets 3-2 on Tuesday, September 13 at Citi Field in New York. The Nationals extended their lead to two-games in the four-game series to revive themselves in contention
for third position in National League East.
The Nationals have surged to form in the depth of the season and this is a good sign for manager Davey Johnson who has not been conservative in making changes. With two games still left in the series, it is now becoming highly likely that the gulf between
both teams will come to a bare minimum.
Craig Stammen produced his personal-best for the visitors to guide them to their 69th win of the season. Stammen had been demoted to Triple-A for the major part of the regular season and was called up to the professional league only as late as
September 6. However, Stammen made the most of this opportunity and went on to win his first game and record his first hit in over a year.
Stammen pitched a perfect spell of 1.1 innings to allow the Nationals room for drawing level after conceding two runs in the fifth inning. Washington showed signs of sloppiness in the field when an error by right-fielder Jayson Werth allowed Ruben Tejada
to double the lead for the Mets after Reyes had scored the first run earlier in the same inning.
The Nationals did well to eradicate the deficit in the sixth inning when Ian Desmond scored from Rick Ankiel’s RBI before he completed his run on Michael Morse’s double to centre-field.
Stammen then produced a mesmerising spell from the mound to keep the game in balance before he added the crucial third-run in the seventh inning to give the Nationals a lead that proved to be sufficient to seal the game.
The Nationals are vying for a third place finish in the division and it will be interesting to see how they come out in the third game to seal the series.
