Washington Nationals may re-sign Michael Gonzalez from free agent market - MLB Update
Left hand reliever, Michael Gonzalez may be playing again for Washington Nationals next year.
While he is in the free agent market at the moment, the Nationals have shown the intention to acquire him from there by offering the desired deal.
Following the expiry of his one-year contract with the Nationals, Gonzalez became free agent at the conclusion of 2012 season.
Given the fact that he formed an ideal combination with the rest of the relievers in the bullpen, it was expected that the Nationals will like to keep him from going to another organisation.
As the offseason is on the cusp of producing exciting revelations about the free agents, the Nationals are about to announce their decision about Gonzalez. Although they face competition from other clubs, they are in an ideal position to obtain Gonzalez
from the market.
Gonzalez also wants to stay in the Nationals’ clubhouse, confirming that he enjoyed playing for them. He has stated that the negotiations with the Nationals are underway with regard to the inking of a new contract.
The Nationals rely heavily on their pitchers to earn success. They boast the presence of quality starters on their rotation, namely Stephen Strasburg, Gio Gonzalez and others.
Michael Gonzalez basically provides variety to the team by being a left hand reliever. As he proved on a number of occasions during the season, he is capable of protecting the lead and producing wins for the starters.
Gonzalez has time and again expressed his desire to keep playing for the Nationals.
“You’re always shooting for a two-year deal,” he said. “The guarantee, the security. I’m at the point in my career where I’m going to the team I feel comfortable most.”
Clarifying the state of the progress made so far with regard to the new agreement, he has explained that matters related to the money have not been discussed yet.
“They’ve had a couple conversations,” Gonzalez said. “[My agent] told me that they’re definitely interested and I’m definitely interested. It’s going to be good. We haven’t started throwing money there. But there’s interest on every side.”
As the teams seek free agents, the Nationals will be looking to conclude the negotiations with Gonzalez at the earliest.
