Washington Nationals obtain Milwaukee Brewers’ Cesar Izturis from waivers - MLB Update
The Washington Nationals claim the Milwaukee Brewers’ shortstop Cesar Izturis from waivers. The deal has been finalised now and Izturis will be playing for the Nationals from now onward. In order to strengthen the team defensively in particular the area
of middle infield, he has been acquired by the Nationals.
The decision has accompanied the announcement of disabled list by the left fielder Mark DeRosa. Furthermore, the position on the roster has been created for Izturis by dispatching reliever Atahualpa Severino for assignment.
The Nationals have all areas addressed and worked out except for their defence.
Their offence is charged up after Jayson Werth has returned. Along with Bryce Harper and the third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, their line-up has achieved a kind of combination which is desired by any team.
As can be observed from the recent performances, in almost every game even when some of the hitters fail, there is always someone in their line-up who will step out and bring hits for the team.
Other than the offence, their rotation is nearly perfect in every department of the play. The starters like Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann are immaculate. One can say that their hurlers are moving toward invincibility, if the dominance with which they
retire line-ups is anything to go by.
Besides the starters, their bullpen enjoys relievers that have helped the club win games from the most pressure cooker situations.
In light of all this, only area that the Nationals manager Davey Johnson believes can be damaging for the club is the defence. Therefore, acquisition of Izturis is a step in this direction.
While the manager Johnson may have shifted the existing players to move to shortstop position to fill the spot, he does not want to comprise by using makeshift measures. Since Izturis boasts recognised credentials for fielding at short stop, Johnson has
gone after him.
“I didn’t want to be doing all that,” Johnson said. “We’re in a pennant race. You can’t do that. (Acquiring Izturis) was a good move. If DeRosa was pressed into action and made a quick move, he could be lost for the year. This just protects us in a lot of
ways.”
Getting the potential loopholes fixed in advance can be a great idea by the manager. As Izturis has been included on the roster now, it will be interesting to know as to what extent he can meet the expectations of the management.
