Washington Nationals outclass San Francisco Giants 6-4 as Jayson Werth shines - MLB Update
Shortstop Danny Espinosa and right fielder Jayson Werth guide the Washington Nationals to a 6-4 win against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park, San Francisco, California on August 15, 2012 in the last game of the three match series.
The Nationals’ offence immediately asserts its mettle after it failed to step up in the last match.
By hitting 12 hits on Wednesday, Washington’s hitters have reinforced the fact that they are capable of roughing up any pitcher.
While the rest of the batters made connections on the plate, their centre fielder Bryce Harper failed as he went through another hitless game. He was 0-for-5 on Wednesday.
Jayson Werth was the most successful batter from the Nationals. He contributed three RBIs while connecting two hits in four at-bats. Other than him, Espinosa slammed two hits in four at-bats.
The starter Stephen Strasburg reaches his 14th win of the season after this game. He pitched six innings for Washington. While he leaked two runs, he did not allow Giants to experience a run-rampage and make a decisive fight back in turn.
With the victory on Wednesday, Strasburg has strengthened his credentials for winning the Cy Young award.
Meanwhile, Nationals’ catcher Kurt Suzuki speaks about Strasburg and the kind of pitches he employs for winning games.
"He pitches. Guys talk about his power stuff but he knows what he's doing out there," said Suzuki. "He's got all the hype around him. Being on the outside looking in, you always wonder. Being in a different league, and now to be catching him, you see what
it's all about."
Unlike the opponents that the Nationals came across in their last two series, the Giants are an accomplished side. Therefore, they are facing fierce resistance as the teams battle it out.
During the match, they had to play exceptionally well to block the onslaught that the Giants were searching throughout the game to launch.
Meanwhile, Washington’s manager Davey Johnson cannot ask for anything more than this from his offence. Except for Harper and the third baseman Ryan Zimmerman, most of his batters made a contribution one way or the other.
Only area that the Nationals will be looking to work on is their bullpen as they head to play the next series.
