Washington Nationals overcome New York Mets 3-2 – MLB news
Washington Nationals showed the stuff they are capable of as they secured a narrow 3-2 win against the New York Mets at Nationals Park in Washington, DC on Tuesday, June 4 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2013 Major League Baseball
regular season.
A lot of credit should be given to the Nationals’ pitching rotation for executing their game plan to perfection. Starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann played a key role in deciding the outcome of the clash as he allowed just four hits and two runs in eight
solid innings to lay the foundations of an impressive win for his team. Striking out batters at regular intervals, the right hander showed nerves of steel under pressure.
Relief pitcher Tyler Clippard, however, was the star of the show as he pitched the perfect ninth to hold off the Mets, claiming his fourth win of the season. For the Mets, starter Jeremy Hefner displayed high quality pitching skills as he allowed just four
hits and one run in seven innings while striking out seven batters. Hefner was, however, unfortunate to end up on the losing side.
“I left a few balls over the middle that I didn't like,” Bobby Parnell said. “But they're a good hitting team. It's a good part of the lineup, and I didn't walk them or anything like that. They hit some decent pitches, but I could've been better.”
“It capped a really terrible start to the day, you know,” manager Davey Johnson said. “It's tough to send guys out of here, they're part of the family, and we didn't actually play that good until about the last part of the game. It was a great finish. It
makes the day worthwhile.”
Nationals made a very strong start to the contest, thanks a mighty solo home run by Ian Desmond in the second innings. Mets came back strongly in the fifth inning as they came back from behind to claim a 2-1 lead but the night belonged to the Nationals,
who scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to claim a vital 1-0 lead in the series.
