Washington Nationals overpower New York Mets 3-2 – MLB Update
Drew Storen fumbled but maintained his cool and Ian Desmond helped the Washington Nationals beat the New York Mets 3-2 on Sunday, July 31 at Nationals Park enabling Washington to win the three-game series by 2-1.
However, what was the single most amazing feature of the game was Storen’s eight innings spell that could cost the team.
"It's probably the weirdest day of my career," said Storen, a crowd favorite since he was chosen with the 10th overall pick in the 2009 draft. "As much as I have to shut that stuff out, it's still on your mind. But once I saw the clock hit 4 I was pretty
excited and really happy."
Nonetheless, for the New York Mets, the series outcome was extremely disappointing. Starting the series with an 8-5 win, the Mets could not maintain their dominance and lost the last two games to the Nationals.
"It's frustrating to lose back-to-back games," Hairston said. "We're playing good as a whole. We didn't catch our breaks toward the end there.”
The game started with Jordan Zimmermann’s unplayable first inning whereby he did not allow any Washington Nationals’ hitter to go for runs. With increasingly fast paced pitches, he ended his first scoreless inning.
Jonathon Niese followed with an equally strong inning. Tossing pitches with different variation, where the throwing velocity saw an increasing pace, Niese was able to contain the New York Mets’ offence.
The drought of runs came to an end in the sixth inning when Jonathon Niese entered into the sixth inning. Ryan Zimmerman, who was himself pitching effective innings, scored the first run for the Washington Nationals.
Having scored a 1-0 lead, the Washington Nationals’ hitter Michael Morse came down harder on the Mets’ starter Jonathon Niese and scored another RBI single that doubled the lead for the team. The Nationals concluded the sixth inning with a 2-0 lead.
Scott Hairston was able to score the first run for the New York Mets when Sean Burnett came as a reliever, following Zimmermann. He allowed seven hits in the six innings that he pitched, not giving up any runs to the Mets’ hitters.
Hairston’s single brought the lead down 2-1. Before the Nationals could completely win the game, Hairston drove in another run in the inning against Drew Storen that threw a new sensation in the game.
Having levelled the score, the Mets’ explored the possibility of a comeback to take the game ahead, but failed as Ian Desmond hit a much-needed RBI single to earn the Nationals a hard fought 3-2 win as Bobby Parnell reeled with the 2-hits that he allowed.
