Washington Nationals overwhelm New York Mets 2-0 – MLB Update
The Washington Nationals won their fourth game in row to beat the New York Mets 2-0 on Wednesday, September 14 at Citi Field in New York.
Brad Peacock tossed a brilliant spell of five solid innings to overwhelm the New York Mets’ offence.
Having won the last two games only by a slight margin of 3-2 respectively, the Nationals this time had the service of Peacock. His 94 pitches, three walks and two strike-outs wrecked havoc on the Mets and did not really allow them to reverse the tide.
Backed by the equally effective services of Tyler Clippard, Tom Gorzelanny and Drew Storen who pitched shut-out innings from the sixth inning onwards, the Nationals put an end to the game 2-0, also adding to the certainty that they will sweep the series.
Mike Pelfrey of the Mets threw seven innings, giving up six hits and allowing two runs that proved costly for the team. Compared to Peacock’s 1.42 ERA, Pelfrey had 4.48 in the game with six strike-outs.
After having pitched two shut-out innings, Pelfrey fell short in the third once he came on the mound. First it was Michael Morse who singled to centre to score the first run for the Washington Nationals.
Before Pelfrey could settle, Jayson Werth went for another quick single that doubled the lead for the team, putting the New York Mets in difficult situation. Peacock, on the other hand, pitched with characteristic poise.
Having already had the 2-0 lead in the four-game series, the Nationals came down hard on the New York Mets’ offence. Peacock ended his magical spell of over five innings, not allowing any run, after whom Gorzelanny pitched an effective sixth and seventh
as Tyler Clippard had a shut-out eighth.
Drew Storen had another save for the Nationals as he tossed a hitless and scoreless ninth to win the game 2-0 for the Nationals. The series’ last game will be played on Thursday.
The Nationals put in a brilliant performance as they managed to restrict the Mets’ offence from scoring in the game.
