Washington Nationals rout Chicago Cubs 11-5 as Adam LaRoche and Ian Desmond shine-MLB Update
Shortstop Ian Desmond and first baseman Adam LaRoche shine as the Washington Nationals rout the Chicago Cubs 11-5 at Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. on September 4, 2012 in the second game of the four match series.
Washington rose to lead in the first inning and before the Cubs can manage to cut in to it they substantiated it with three more runs in the second. While Cubs showed resistance in the latter half of the match, it was of little help to their cause because
Washington’s lead was nearly unassailable.
Meanwhile, Nationals struck 19 hits on Tuesday. Their centre fielder Jayson Werth hammered four hits in five at-bats.
First baseman LaRoche was just perfect in using his at-bats as he was 4-for-4.
Even since Werth has joined the line-up after recovering from a broken wrist, he has been outstanding with regard to connecting hits.
Currently boasting the highest batting average from the top order in the line-up, his present rate of striking hits can put him among the best hitters in the season.
Werth is hitting .324 at the moment.
Washington saw six home-runs thrashed by their batters on Tuesday. LaRoche smacked two home-runs in the match.
It was an all-round show as opposed to recording a victory based on an individual’s performance by the Nationals.
Their starter Edwin Jackson was lucky as he earned sufficient run support. He completed little more than five innings and struck-out eight on Tuesday. He yielded seven hits and gave up four runs.
Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson is fairly pleased with the kind of combination that has been developed in the line-up.
"We're in a pretty good place offensively," Johnson said. "I like the lineup we have. We haven't had the lineup together very long."
LaRoche accredits the contribution of pitchers in the victory and the effectiveness with which they restricted batters from launching a counter-attack.
"We owe this to our pitchers for bailing us out," LaRoche said. "It goes back to getting a lot of guys going well. You see better pitches. Everybody gets better pitches to hit. There's nobody to really pitch around because you get somebody dangerous on deck."
Things are going perfectly for Washington at the moment. Let’s see how they keep the momentum going in upcoming matches.
