Washington Nationals rout New York Mets 8-2 as Bryce Harper puts up heroic performance-MLB
Right fielder Bryce Harper and the third-baseman Ryan Zimmerman lead the Washington Nationals to an overwhelming 8-2 victory against the New York Mets on July 23, 2012 at Citi Field, New York, NY in the first game of the three match series.
Harper took the Nationals to an early lead as he struck a two-run homer in the first. Afterward, Washington’s offence experienced a lengthy hibernation with not even a single run coming off until the end of the ninth. In the meantime, New York tied the score
by putting two runs on the scoreboard.
As the game entered into the tenth inning, Washington made it almost impossible for New York to bounce back by adding six runs.
Mets' manager Terry Collins will be worried about the way his team surrendered after coming so close to victory.
Mets’ starter Chris Young was solid in seven innings as he did not let Nationals go on a run-rampage for as long as he was on the mound. However, their relief pitcher Tim Byrdak let the team down at a time when a scoreless inning was needed the most by the
club.
By the time Byrdak allowed two runs, Washington surged to a lead, which was further substantiated as the reliever Pedro Beato, who followed him, proved even worse.
Collins is growing increasingly concerned over continuous failures by his players. New York is in danger of losing in the race for earning the second position on the National League East Division table. Therefore, the manager realises that if they cannot
put up consistent performances right now, other teams will leave them far behind.
"I'm on top of that stuff every day," Collins said. "I don't have to hold team meetings to make sure I get to see key people."
Meanwhile, Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson can be content with the fact that they are moving in the right direction.
Harper, who hammered an amazing home-run on Monday, was jubilant after playing a significant role in the triumph of his side.
"Coming to New York, all the fans love their teams, you just try to come in here and play it like another team," Harper said.
There are still two games remaining in the series. The fact the Mets’ players will be h**l-bent for winning gives one a reason to be excited about the upcoming matches.
