Washington Nationals scratch Stephen Strasburg after the sixth as cut on his finger widens-MLB
No matter how hard starting pitcher Stephen Strasburg cries for throwing greater number of innings in one game, the Washington Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson will not risk allowing him. That is a bottom line of Strasburg’s expedition in the 2012 regular
season. On Wednesday, Strasburg was h**l-bent to go more than six innings, but Johnson intervened and brought him out of the mound.
This time it was more due to the cut on a fingernail than anything pre-determined that led Johnson to call him back early.
While throwing, one of the pitches caused a cut on Stephen's finger. The manager feared that it may turn into something serious and took the decision immediately.
The club has great hope in Stephen this year as they want him to stay throughout the season. Any sort of injury to him can wreak havoc to their prospects. The fact Strasburg had Tommy John surgery; care he is being accorded by the manager is understandable.
Strasburg wants to be part and parcel of the glory that Nationals are all set to achieve in the season. Currently occupying top position on National League East Division table, he looks forward to see the club dominating in a similar fashion.
“I try not to think about it,” Strasburg said. “With the direction that we’re going and everything, it makes it even harder to not think about it. I can’t control that. Hopefully things can change, and if we get to where we want to be, somehow I’m part of
it.”
When situation of the cut was inquired from Johnson, he told it was minor and trainers are going to fix it shortly, but the reason why he took the hurried decision was to make sure it did not grow worse.
“It’s a little slight cut,” Johnson said. “It should calm down. Hopefully our doctors and trainers can heal him up before our next start and it won’t be an issue.”
Strasburg has been horrific for the batters so far, especially the way he steals strike-outs and keeps the hitters guessing about his enigmatic throws. Even if he has pitched a fewer number of innings, he has done the job effectively. In most occasions he
has brought wins for the side.
He will like to see the cut on his finger disappearing soon and rendering him in a position to throw painlessly.
