Washington Nationals shutout by Philadelphia Phillies 0-8 – MLB Recap
The Washington Nationals were comprehensively beaten by the Philadelphia Phillies 0-8 in the first game of their three-match regular series on Tuesday, July 31 at Nationals Park in Washington D.C.
Phillies played offensively from the very first inning and kept their winning momentum going towards the last inning of play.
They also kept the Nationals’ under pressure during the entire game and never let them take control of the match at anytime.
Phillies’ pitchers and hitters also played according to the plan laid down by their team manager which eventually provided them a great shut-out victory in the end.
Especially the pitchers showed their true energy and never gave too many chances to the Nationals’ hitters who were unable to score a single run throughout the game.
Phillies’ went early into the lead and kept scoring until the last inning. They scored on a consistent basis and stretched their lead to eight which eventually proved decisive for them as they edge past the Nationals with style.
On the other hand, the Nationals played with low energy and received a heavy blow when the Phillies ousted them with bitter humiliation.
“Obviously, he didn't have his best stuff and his location wasn't real good," Nationals’ manager Davey Johnson said. "He was fighting himself, young pitcher, lost a little poise. It's part of growing up."
Starter Stephen Strasburg pitched four runs and allowed six runs, eight hits, six earned runs and three homers on his 3.12 ERA.
He looked tired on the mound and was hammered with big hits.
“I think I threw one fastball down the way I wanted to, and that was the first pitch of the game," Strasburg said. "I feel like I'd get through a couple guys and feel like I'm getting in a groove, then all of a sudden go back to leaving pitches up and getting beat on them."
On the other hand, Phillies’ starter Cliff Lee certainly won the game for his team. He pitched seven innings and allowed five hits without any runs. He struck-out seven on his 3.73 ERA and literally proved one of the winning factors for the Phillies.
