Washington Nationals thrash New York Mets 5-1 as Gio Gonzalez wins 19th game - MLB Update
Starter Gio Gonzalez scripts his 19th win of the season in style as the Washington Nationals thrash the New York Mets 5-1 at Citi Field, New York on September 10, 2012 in the first game of the three match series.
Gonzalez initiated the beginning of the eventual demise of the Mets. By giving up just one run in six innings, he helped the Nationals protect their lead and did not allow New York to experience any run-rampage.
Gonzalez’s quality spell on Monday will be encouraging for the team in light of the fact that Stephen Strasburg has been shut-down. As the Nationals head to play in the play-offs, they will like to see him continue performing in a similar fashion throughout
the season.
As far as the offence was concerned, the Nationals relied on three home-runs to post five runs on the scoreboard.
Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman smacked a home-run in the third inning which strengthened their lead and made it extremely difficult for the floundering Mets’ offence to come back into the game.
Following Zimmerman, Ian Desmond came in the fourth inning and slammed another home-run for the team, putting the last nail in the Mets’ coffin.
Mets’ manager Terry Collins is disheartened as his team fails in every match. All the motivational words that he speaks before them are not bearing fruit. Since the beginning of the second half of the season, the Mets are flailing.
"I've done this long enough to know that you don't ever give up," Terry Collins said. "You don't ever stop, you don't ever stop grinding it out. You don't ever stop walking through the locker room every day making sure the guys are upbeat, that they're positive,
trying to move forward. That doesn't change one bit."
The Nationals can take positives from the fact that they returned to their best form immediately after slumping in the last game against the Miami Marlins. Their offence which could hardly strike a reasonable number of hits in the last match was prolific
on Monday.
Washington will be looking to continue their success in upcoming games as they carry their winning momentum forward.
