Washington Nationals to make decision about Adam LaRoche as Christmas nears-MLB Update
A couple of weeks ago, General Manager of the Washington Nationals Mike Rizzo, hinted the Christmas as the time around which decision about contract extension of Adam LaRoche will be made.
As Christmas is not far away at the moment, the talks between both parties may move towards a conclusion within the next few days.
So far, there is no indication whether the Nationals have made any serious attempt, since Rizzo made remarks about LaRoche.
It seems the possibility of retention of LaRoche by Washington is eliminating rapidly.
LaRoche was the Gold Glove winner for the Nationals during the 2012 season at first base.
Besides, he won the Silver Slugger Award and was arguably the most successful batter of the Nationals during the season.
LaRoche was signed by the Nationals to a two-year deal in 2011. While in the first year of his contract, he was unimpressive and in the second, he turned out to be the difference maker for the team.
In many ways, the Nationals owe a great number of their wins to stand out offensive shows at the plate by LaRoche.
In short, to make sure the Nationals repeat their incredible performance in the 2013 season, re-signing LaRoche is extremely important.
The hurdle before the Nationals is that he wants a three-year contract, which they cannot agree to.
Firstly, it is because LaRoche is ageing. Secondly, the club fears the possibility that his power will decline down the line.
As per the reports, the Nationals have agreed on offering a two-year deal but LaRoche is h**l-bent to get the desired contract.
Realising the possibility that LaRoche may leave the club, the Nationals have made certain infield adjustments on the roster.
For example, they have hinted that Michael Morse shifiting to first base from his original outfield position, in case LaRoche does not return.
At the same time, Washington has included an outfielder, Denard Span, in the team during the offseason, who will replace Morse.
LaRoche will be aware of the indifference that the Nationals are showing toward him.
The time has come where both the parties cannot prolong talks further, without showing serious intent to take the matter to conclusion.
LaRoche will be hoping that the Nationals renounce their contention in the negotiations and accept his asking price.
