Washington Nationals wipe out New York Mets 10-1 to complete series sweep – MLB Update
The Washington Nationals completed a four-game series sweep of the New York Mets after annihilating them 10-1 in the fourth game on Thursday, September 15 at Citi Field in New York.
The win took the Nationals to the third place in the National League East, toppling the Mets for the spot.
Neither team was allowed a run before the Nationals finally broke the deadlock in the fifth inning when Wilson Ramos and Ian Desmond scored a run each. Desmond starred for the Nationals on the plate, going 5-for-6 and driving in three important-runs to wipe
out the Mets. Ramos also followed suit, producing three hits in his five at-bats and driving in a run to improve his batting average to .263 for the season.
The Mets showed resistance in the sixth inning when David Wright reduced the deficit to just one run on Jason Bay’s RBI but the visitors did well to keep the Mets at bay thereon, disallowing any other scoring chance.
Tom Milone was the pick of the pitchers for Washington, conceding just one run in his spell of 5.1 innings amid three hits to bag his first win on the professional circuit. He showed good composure and variety to silence the Mets and the relief pitchers
did well to compliment the starter, disallowing a run in the remaining three-plus innings to seal a rare victory on the road.
Manager Mike Rizzo said, “"I think you're seeing signs that we're starting to learn how to win. I think we're seeing a little maturation of how to play on the road and how to prepare on the road."
A three-run eighth inning followed by a four-run ninth hurried the Nationals to a nine-run lead over the struggling Mets, who never got a chance to refurbish their position in the game. Ramos scored in the eighth and the ninth inning to augment his case
for a permanent position in the line-up next season.
Jose Reyes was scratched from the starting line-up for the Mets after having failed miserably in the previous outings. The home team inducted young blood to the line-up but the offensive side did not shine for the Mets yet again.
The Nationals won the four-game series 4-0.
