Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan to finalise next year’s coaching staff soon – NFL News
After the end of a depressing season, Washington Redskins Head Coach Mike Shanahan is pondering over different options regarding bringing some changes in the coaching staff and said on Monday that he would meet the assistant coaches in next couple of weeks.
The Redskins finished the season at the end of the National Football Conference East division with 11 defeats (including a six-game losing streak) and only five victories under their belt.
Shanahan has just completed his second year as head coach at Washington. In his first year, he led the team to six victories. Sadly, the record did not improve this year.
Addressing his season-ending press conference, Shanahan said that he had not made any decision as to who among the coach staff would return to the franchise next year. He also said that he is not up reaching a decision in haste. The coach said:
“I haven’t sat down and talked to any of our coaches. I take the first couple weeks right now to sit back and talk to every coach. So no decision is made very quickly where I get a chance to sit down and talk to them as well as going back and taking a look
at all of our offensive players and defensive players.”
When asked about performance of special team, the head coach said that the team needs to improve a lot in that area. However, he praised the coordinator Danny Smith and said expressed satisfaction over how Smith was doing his job.
“I think he’s done a great job with the special teams unit and we’re going to continue to get better. We’re pretty inexperienced at that position, which is no excuse, but we’ll keep on working to upgrade us.”
Meanwhile, Shanahan also said that the franchise wants to re-sign linebacker London Fletcher in the offseason.
Shanahan hoped that Fletcher would continue to play for the Redskins in the years to come and said that signing the linebacker was a matter of priority for him.
Fletcher is a 14-year veteran, who started his professional career back in 1998 with St. Louis Rams. After playing four seasons with the Rams, Fletcher moved to Buffalo Bills for five years.
In 2007, he joined the Redskins and has not missed any game since then. He has played his last 178 games as a starter without missing any game in last 11 seasons.
In 16 games this season, he recorded 166 tackles, 1.5 sacks and two interceptions.
