Washington Redskins Lorenzo Alexander learning to play at tight end position – NFL News
In his six-year career as a professional footballer, Lorenzo Alexander has played on offence as well on defence. However, his major role as been to work as linebacker, but that could change in near future.
Apart from training as per the routine schedule, Alexander is also learning to play at tight end position; something he has briefly done in past.
Although it is not conformed if Redskins would be using him at the tight end position in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season, he is apparently preparing himself so he could be utilised when needed.
While giving an interview to WJFK-FM, Alexander confirmed that he was practising to play at the tight end position and maintained that the management had come up with this decision so as to counter any unforeseen circumstances during the next season.
He said:
"They’ve got me over there learning some of the tight end position. But it’s more so being ready like I was last year, instead of just throwing me in there when somebody got hurt.”
Alexander added:
“It’s more about just having me mentally ready, mentally sharp, so I can go in there and still do the same type of job that Darrel Young or Chris Cooley would do at fullback or that tiger tight end position."
Alexander was not very fortunate as far as start of the NFL career is concerned.
In 2005, he was signed by the Carolina Panthers, who released him the next after keeping the player on their practice squad.
After being released, Alexander moved to the Baltimore Ravens, who released him five days after signing. Later, Redskins signed him to their practice squad and the player has been playing for them since then.
He has played as offence guard and tight end for a short period of time before adjusting into the role of linebacker.
Now that he is again asked to train for the tight end position, he thinks that it will be a bit difficult, but not impossible.
He said:
“I haven’t done it in a while. Obviously I’m a smaller guy now so it’s going to be a little bit more of just getting back in there and getting that technique back."
