Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III no more ‘Bob Griffin’ for New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora
Earlier this year when everyone was busy discussing hype of the 2012 draft and the prospective players who got top draft ratings, New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora called quarterback Robert Griffin III, the second overall pick of the draft selected
by Washington Redskins, “Bob Griffin”, saying that the rookie must impress with his performance to earn Osi’s respect.
The offseason and preseason went satisfactory for everyone and all the new players got a chance to showcase their true talent on the field when the regular season started.
Six weeks into the season, Robert Griffin III (RG3) has led the team to three victories, suffered a mild concussion and recovered from it, and was nearly able to clinch victories in three more games in which Redskins suffered short-margin defeats.
All of this is more than enough for RG3 to shape his image in front of Osi, who is clearly impressed with the rookie.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Osi has expressed his respect for RG3, saying:
“Sir. His name is Sir Robert Griffin. That’s what I refer to him now.”
Osi said of RG3:
“Look at what he’s done. Look at the way he’s performed as a rookie. You don’t see players come into the league performing like that at that stage in their career, so all the respect in the world goes to him and he’s a phenomenal football player. … I opened
my mouth and I said when he does anything in the league we’re going to call him his name and he’s definitely earned whatever he wants to be called, he’s earned that for sure.”
On some levels, RG3 has performed even better than Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, the first overall pick of this year’s draft.
RG3 has better pass completion, quarterback and passer ratings than Luck and the former has also tasted more victories (3) than the latter (2) so far.
As Giants prepare to face RG3-led Redskins offence, there is no denying that the defending champions are up for a tough challenge. However, Giants defence is also very strong and can limit RG3’s movement.
