Washington Redskins’ QB coach Matt LaFleur backs Kirk Cousins – NFL News
Washington Redskins’ quarterbacks coach, Matt LaFleur, has said that the team’s fourth-round pick in 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, Kirk Cousins, is a valuable acquisition by the team and that the player is capable of displaying marvels on the
field.
LaFleur expressed these remarks while giving an interview to 106.7 The Fan.
Before signing Cousins, Redskins had already selected quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), as the second overall pick.
Cousins’ addition in the squad is aimed at strengthening the quarterback position and the player will serve as RG3’s backup.
According to different reports, Redskins wanted to draft him in earlier rounds of the draft, but could not do so. However, they were surprised to see that Cousins was not selected by any other team until the fourth round and the Redskins did not let the
opportunity slip out of their hands.
While sharing his thoughts on Cousins’ selection, LaFleur said:
“I thought Kirk would’ve been gone long before the fourth round, and when he’s sitting there, and you have a high grade on him, it’s like you can’t lose with that pick, in my opinion. You can never have enough good players, especially at arguably the most
important position of all of sports.”
LaFleur also said that presence of RG3 and Cousins in the squad will help both quarterbacks in grooming their skills.
Since RG3 will be the team’s starter and Cousins will be his backup, LaFleur thinks that the latter should be ready to take the field at any given time owing to some untoward circumstances.
He said:
“You’ve got two guys coming in here and they’ll get the chance to grow together and learn together and study together. … Both of those guys have intangibles off the charts. There’s no doubt in my mind they’ll get along great and really push each other to
be better players.”
Meanwhile, LaFleur also shared his views on the position of quarterback, Rex Grossman, who was Redskins’ regular starter in the last season.
LaFleur highlighted Grossman’s qualities and services to the team while mentioning some of his flaws, but maintained that Grossman’s experience will help young players gain better understanding of the game.
