Washington Redskins’ Ryan Kerrigan determined to maintain fitness – NFL News
The National Football League (NFL) is a tough stage where players are known not only for their game-playing skills and abilities, but also for high level of fitness that compliments their talent.
Maintaining fitness becomes more essential for college players who are supposed to turn pro or those who are still in their rookie contracts.
The same is the case with Washington Redskins’ linebacker, Ryan Kerrigan, who played his first professional season last year after being selected by the team in the 2011 NFL draft.
Since his college days, Kerrigan, 23, has maintained high fitness levels, which, he thinks, help them deliver his best on the field.
Kerrigan ensured he stayed healthy throughout his rookie season and did his best to achieve the cause. He worked out rigorously and controlled his diet to perfection, enabling himself to stay fit throughout the four quarters of the game.
He participated in all the training and practice sessions in his rookie year and got to start all the 16 games of the regular season, and his statistics speak of his potential.
In the last regular season, Kerrigan made a total of 63 tackles while registering 7.5 sacks. Not only that, he also recorded four forced fumbles and made one interception.
The brilliant performance, Kerrigan thinks, has come because he was able to stay healthy. While sharing his secret behind staying fit back in his college days, Kerrigan said:
“I was a pretty healthy eater in college. I rarely ate sweets. I didn’t eat out much. I think that diet and working out really hard helped sustain me through my years in college and through all four quarters of a game.”
After turning pro, he has become even more cautious of his health and fitness. Here is what he did after entering the professional league:
“Just eating lean and healthy, a lot of fruit and a lot of vegetables. I stay active in the weight room. Even the day after a football game, when I’m sore and I don’t feel like lifting, I make sure I do it because it helps speed up the recovery process and
it builds up my conditioning for the next week’s game.”
Kerrigan is working out in the offseason as well and is hopeful of performing well in the next season.
