Washington Redskins: The most prominent slump of the NFC East division (NFL Special part I)
Almost every team in the National Football Conference (NFC) East Division underwent a slump in the current National Football League (NFL) season, but sooner or later recovered from it to end the season on a relatively positive note.
However, Washington Redskins was the only team that failed to live up to that tradition.
Redskins started the season well, but was down soon. With every game the losing streak stretched, and the hopes of fans were crushed even more.
The main problem for Redskins remained its offence.
The quarterbacks struggled badly throughout the season and it will come to no one’s surprise if the team management selects a new quarterback in the upcoming drafts.
The most impressive performance Redskins managed to display was against New York Giants.
The current NFC champions played two games against Redskins and lost both.
In this space, we are going to have a look at what happened in those games, besides having a glance at Redskins’ overall performance in the season.
Against New York Giants
Washing Redskins started the season with a home game. New York Giants were the first team to visit them.
Giants scored a touchdown in the first quarter to get the lead.
However, Redskins began displaying their class in the next quarter in which they scored two touchdowns while Giants could score only one.
After halftime, the scores were levelled, 14-14.
Redskins got the lead in the third quarter after intercepting a pass from Giants quarterback, Eli Manning, and returning it for a touchdown.
The lead was further increased in the final quarter when Redskins quarterback, Rex Grossman, and wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, combined for a four-yard touchdown.
The final scored settled at 28-14.
Grossman completed 21 of 34 attempted passes for 305 yards and sent two touchdowns. He received a quarterback rating of 110.5.
Against Arizona Cardinals
After having a great start to the season, Redskins hosted Arizona Cardinals.
The first glimpse of the weak offence was witnessed during this game.
Grossman repeated the heroics of last game, but stained his record by throwing two interceptions.
He finished completing 25 passes of 43 attempts for 291 yards and two touchdowns.
The game was eventually won by Redskins after a very close encounter.
Redskins were down after the third quarter, 14-10.
However, they scored two field goals and a touchdown while allowing the opponents to score only one touchdown to end the game at 22-21, in their favour.
At Dallas
Redskins played their first road game of the season against Dallas Cowboys, and that’s when they tasted the first defeat of the season.
Cowboys’ kicker, Dan Bailey, scored six field goals during the game helping his team win its second straight game.
Throughout out the game, only one touchdown was scored, which was credited to Rex Grossman.
Both the teams scored three field goals each in the first half.
Redskins managed a touchdown in the third quarter, but Cowboys scored a field goal in that quarter and two in the final to edge past the visitors, 18-16.
Grossman also sent an interception in the game and received a quarterback rating of 77.5. He gained 250 yards after completing 22 of his 37 attempted passes.
Redskins’ coach, Mike Shanahan, was confused after the game and said:
"We're going to find out what type of football team we have. When you lose like that it hurts.”
