Washington Redskins: The most prominent slump of the NFC East division (NFL Special part II)
Continued from part I...
At St. Louis
Those were still good days for Redskins.
After bearing their first defeat of the season, Redskins went to St. Louis and beat Rams to register their third victory in past four games.
Redskins started with quarterback, Rex Grossman, who put the team in lead in the first quarter.
The lead was doubled in the second quarter when running back, Ryan Torain, rushed for 20 yards to score a touchdown.
A field goal in the third quarter took Redskins’ lead to 17 points.
Rams finally got a chance to score in the final quarter. Josh Brown scored a field goal, which was followed by a touchdown.
However, Rams could not completely overcome the deficit and lost the game 17-10.
Although Redskins was enjoying, but the euphoria might have forced them to overlook what the quarterback was doing.
Grossman was once again not up to the mark. He threw two interceptions in the game and no one could tell what more was to come.
Against Philadelphia Eagles
Many observers thought of the Redskins as the National Football Conference (NFC) East contenders when they entered bye week.
However, what followed after the bye is an agonising tale, which only adds to fans’ gloom.
It started against Philadelphia Eagles.
Grossman was the first one to come in the line of fire.
He had only completed nine of 22 attempted pass for 143 yards and sent four interceptions before the crowd started booing him.
As a result, he was replaced by John Beck.
During the game, Eagles had scored 20 points before Redskins could get their first scoring move.
Eagles were restricted after that, but Redskins’ offence could not cover the deficit and managed only 13 points.
The final score settled at 20-13.
At Carolina
No wonders Beck started this game.
Redskins visited Carolina and played considerably well in the first half by the end of which the Panthers were leading, 9-6.
However, the visitors faced some serious aggression from Panthers in the second half.
Panther got three touchdowns and a field goal while Redskins could only get two touchdowns to end the game at 33-20.
The result of the game ruined Beck’s joy of playing as a starter.
He said after the game that:
“I wasn't going out there trying to be too perfect; my ultimate goal was to walk away having won the game. This is obviously not the feeling we wanted to have."
At Buffalo
As if two straight defeats were not enough, Redskins suffered utter humiliation when they played (or tried to play) against Buffalo Bills.
Beck got another start and his performance proved why the team management should introduce someone competent at the quarterback position.
He finished after completing 20 passes of 33 attempts for 208 yards and sent two interceptions. He received a quarterback rating of 53.6.
Bills got scoring move in every quarter.
They managed a touchdown in the first quarter, two field goals in the second and another touchdown and a field goal in the third and fourth respectively.
On the other hand, Redskins strived throughout the game but could not get any scoring move. The final score settled at 23-0.
The disappointed Redskins’ coach, Mike Shanahan, was stunned by the shutout loss.
He commented after the game:
"It's pretty humbling to take that. That's as bad as I've ever been involved with from the offensive side."
