Washington Redskins: The most prominent slump of the NFC East division (NFL Special part IV)
Continued from part III...
Against New York Jets
Redskins had just snapped a six-game losing streak, but that neither changed the fact that Grossman was not going to send any interception now nor it guaranteed more victories for the team.
The offence, despite performing poorly, managed to get some points early against New York Jets.
After the end of third quarter, both teams were tied, 13-13.
Redskins got two field goals in the final quarter while, the visitors had three touchdowns to seal the victory, 34-19.
Grossman did not send any touchdown, and is there a need to tell that he did throw an interception?
Against New England Patriots
Redskins hosted New England Patriots and gave a tough time to the visitors, but the latter somehow managed to get its fifth straight victory.
By the end of second quarter, the teams were tied, 20-20.
The Pats scored two touchdowns in the third, while Redskins got only one.
The rest of the game went scoreless and the final score settled at 34-27.
Coach, Mike Shanahan, said after the game:
“Yeah, you're always disappointed when you can't finish a game.”
He added:
“I thought we did a number of good things today, but at the end of the day we fell a little bit short.”
At New York
There were no chances for Redskins to reach the postseason as they had lost nine out of 13 games.
However, that did not deprive them of the opportunity to stun the league.
They made the competition in the NFC East division in week 15 exciting than ever after defeating New York Giants for the second time in the season.
No one was surprised to see Grossman throwing two interceptions, but it was Giants quarterback, Eli Manning, whose three interceptions caught everybody’s attention.
Redskins scored two touchdowns and three field goals to win the game, 23-10.
Against Minnesota Vikings
After they had outsmarted the Giants, many were expecting from the Redskins to end the season on a positive note by winning the last two games.
But living up to the expectations was a trait Grossman was following religiously. He scored two touchdowns, but did not avoid an interception.
Redskins were just three points behind Vikings at the end of the third quarter.
The score was levelled, 23-23, early in the final quarter, but Vikings scored a touchdown and a field goal within the next 10 minutes to gain a handsome advantage.
The final score settled at 33-26.
At Philadelphia
Washington played its last game of the season against Philadelphia Eagles.
The Redskins were already placed at the bottom of the NFC East division and this game ensured that the teams stayed where it was.
The final game saw only a touchdown and a field goal from Redskins while Eagles managed to pile up 34 points.
Grossman had one interception to his name.
Shanahan’s comments at the end of the season were:
"We talked about adding a few pieces on offence, we need a few pieces on defence, a good draft, but we made some strides. Our football team is a lot different than a year ago, and that's a positive."
Now what?
Grossman said after the end of the season that he wanted to stay with this team as he was ‘enjoying’ playing with it.
However, the fans or the management which the quarterback is playing for might not think that way.
