Washington Redskins also showing interest in Indianapolis Colts’ injured quarterback, Peyton Manning
As the speculation that Indianapolis Colts and quarterback, Peyton Manning, are parting ways grows strong, there seems no dearth of opportunists who would love to have the veteran quarterback in their franchise.
Washington Redskins is the recent one to show interest in selecting Manning.
During a radio interview on Monday, January 30, 2012, Redskins’ offensive coordinator, Kyle Shanahan, expressed his desire of having Manning in Redskins’ line-up.
However, he subjected the selection to Manning’s hundred per cent fitness.
He said:
“Just make sure he’s healthy. Everybody knows Peyton Manning is, if not the best quarterback to ever play the game, he’s tied for it.”
Shanahan further commented that:
“I think the question on Peyton is the matter of his health. You got a guy like that who is so driven, so passionate about football. He truly enjoys it. The way he plays. I know he’s up there in age, but if he’s healthy, age is not an issue. That guy takes
care of his body...his arm’s not leaving. He can take the hits. You just hope his neck’s alright, and then he’ll be Peyton Manning.”
Manning, who is undoubtedly one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL), started his professional career in 1998 with Colts.
Right from his first season, he played as the starting quarterback and never missed any game.
However, after playing for 13 years, he missed first game of his career owing to an injury, which forced him out of the complete 2011 season.
Without Manning, Colts only won two out of 16 games in the NFL regular season and finished at the bottom of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division.
The poor record gave Colts a first pick in the upcoming NFL drafts and it is widely anticipated that the franchise will hire Stanford University’s quarterback, Andrew Luck, who is expected to be the top draft pick of the next season.
With the status of Manning’s injury still unclear and an opportunity to hire the number one pick, it will not be a surprising decision if Colts release him.
However, there a few things that should not be ignored.
Firstly, no one knows where Manning will like to head if he parts way with Colts, which is the only team he has played for.
Secondly, whether Manning is able to recover from injury (which could also prove to be season-ending) is a question yet to be answered.
