Washington Redskins beat New York Giants 17-16 – NFL Week 13 Recap
New York Giants lost by 16-17 against Washington Redskins in Week 13 game, on Monday, December 3, 2012, at FedEx Field, Landover, MD.
It was a tough game between the rivals of National Football Conference (NFC) East. Now Redskins (6-6) are just one step behind Giants, who are leading in the division at 7-5
Giants kicker Lawrence Tynes kicked a 39-yard field goal and started the lead with 3-0.
After a few minutes, Redskins rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) fell down when got tackled by Giants safety Stevie Brown. The ball popped out of his hands and was surprisingly caught by wide receiver Joshua Morgan, who ran for 13 yards towards
the end zone.
This was the second time when Redskins scored a touchdown on Griffin’s fumble. Talking about this unexpected touchdown, Griffin said:
"We didn't run (that play) in practice because we wanted to save it for the game, I knew he was going to be there for it. Joshua did a good job being in the spot where he was supposed to be."
In the second quarter, Giants quarterback Eli Manning threw a four-yard pass to tight end Martellus Bennett, who scored a touchdown and increased the lead to 10-7.
It was the only touchdown scored by Manning in the game; he completed 20 of 33 passes for 280 yards.
Redskins kicker Kai Forbath kicked a 33-yard field goal and tied the score at 10-10. At the end of the second quarter, Tynes kicked a 40-yard field goal and took the score to 13-10.
Tynes kicked a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter and took the score to 16-10. Redskins did not score any point in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Griffin threw an eight-yard pass to wide receiver Pierre Garcon and scored the winning touchdown.
Garcon had eight receptions for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Griffin completed 13 of 21 passes for 163 yards and a touchdown.
During the game, RG3 also rushed for 72 yards, beating the record set by Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton last year for most rushing yards by a rookie quarterback.
Redskins rookie running back Alfred Morris rushed for 124 yards on 22 carries, and became the second Redskins rookie to run for 1,000 yards in his first season.
According to Griffin, they are still at a distance from winning the championship, he said:
"We know that our backs are against the wall. And even though we won tonight, our backs are still against the wall. You can put a check by that one, but there's a lot more goals that this team is stretching for and striving for."
On Sunday, December 9, Redskins and Giants are going to play their next games against Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints respectively.
