Washington Redskins cut ties with wide receiver Jabar Gaffney – NFL News
Washington Redskins have released their wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, who played his only National Football League (NFL) season with the team last year and recorded his career-best statistics.
The official announcement by the team was made on Tuesday, May 01, 2012.
This move was already expected as Redskins’ top draft pick, quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), was handed over the team’s number 10 jersey, which Gaffney used to wear.
Soon after his release, Gaffney gave an interview to ESPN's Josina Anderson and shared his views on the team’s decision.
Gaffney informed that he had talked with Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, who told the player that the management wanted to introduce young players on the field, which could restrict Gaffney’s role in the team.
Gaffney said of the conversation with Shanahan:
"He said there is a chance I can come back, but he said it would be for around the minimum because I wouldn't be the starter anymore.”
He added:
“I am not interested in going from being their leading receiver to being third-string, and having my number taken from me. That is pretty much telling me that I am not going to be making the team. Now Drew (Rosenhaus) can start talking to other teams to
find me a new home."
Gaffney started his professional NFL career with Houston Texans in 2002. He played four seasons with the Texans and signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia Eagles in 2006.
However, Eagles released him before the start of the regular season and he later agreed to terms with New England Patriots after signing a two-year deal.
In 2009, he signed a four-year deal with Denver Broncos. After spending two years with Broncos, Gaffney was traded to the Redskins last year.
With Redskins, he played all 16 games of the regular season while starting 15 of them. He recorded a total of 947 receiving yards on 68 receptions and scored five touchdowns.
Gaffney, 31, has spent 10 years playing in the NFL and since he has become a free agent now, he will have an opportunity to join any other team of the league.
However, the latest development has suggested that no team has contacted him yet.
