Washington Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris wants his players to be the best – NFL News
Washington Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris, who has joined the team this year after serving Tampa Bay Buccaneers for three years as head coach, wants his players to be the best on the field, and as the Redskins head to their training camp, the
coach is apparently satisfied with the way the players have performed during the offseason so far.
Redskins were not a very ideal unit to watch last year as they could only manage five victories and were defeated 11 times.
This offseason, they have acquired former Baylor’s quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) as the second overall draft pick while introducing some other changes such as appointment of Morris.
Morris has so far performed well as the players and other officials including head coach Mike Shanahan are satisfied with his coaching methods.
However, his job is to ensure better performance from the defensive backs in the upcoming season and that will only be determined once the season kicks off.
Before that, Morris wants his players to focus on improving their performance. He believes that it does not matter what defensive strategy a team is using if its players have the right attitude and culture.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, he said:
"Our job is to be the very best--that’s our goal at all times. Our means of doing that is to force our will on our opponent. It doesn’t really matter about the scheme. It’s more about the culture that you provide in your room, the attitude that those guys
have to go and play with."
Morris also said that he is enjoying working under Shanahan who, Morris said, allows him the liberty to do things on his own. According to Morris:
"I’m fortunate enough to be in an environment with Coach Shanahan that he allows me to be myself, and he allows himself to be fun as well."
Meanwhile, Morris was also asked if it was difficult for him to coach the defensive backs. He had spent the past three years as a head coach and the transition might be a bit difficult, but the coach surprisingly did not face any problem. He answered the
question saying:
"No, that’s for guys with egos--coaching is coaching.”
