Washington Redskins draft pick Alfred Morris proud of his playing style – NFL News
Washington Redskins’ new running back, Alfred Morris, who has recently been selected in 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, has said that he is proud of his playing style, which, he thinks, helps the team’s offence pretty well.
Morris, a sixth-round pick, used to play for Florida Atlantic. He participated in this year’s Senior Bowl and also attended NFL Scouting Combine where he impressed Redskins’ officials, especially head coach, Mike Shanahan.
What makes him different from other running backs is his ability to block opponents’ defenders. Generally, running backs are supposed to be pass rushers, but Morris’ role in his college team was more than that.
At times he acted as a blocker and pass protector, allowing his quarterback to throw his passes to the intended receivers without being sacked. This ability was the main reason behind Redskins’ interest in the player.
Morris said of his playing style:
"I blocked a lot of defensive ends in the kind of set that we had. The only thing standing between me and him and the quarterback and a sack is me, and I took pride that I never let anybody touch my quarterback.”
Morris also thinks that his playing style differentiates him from other running backs, which, he said, provides him advantage over other players.
He said:
"I actually take pride in [pass protection]. Everyone can run the ball and catch the ball, but what will set you apart from everyone else? I started taking pride in my blocking. I take it as a challenge."
On the other hand, Shanahan also thinks that the player has the ability to stun the opponents in the professional league.
Morris is expected to attend the team’s training session this summer. The coaches will be strictly monitoring his performance and they might also give the player some playing time during the preseason games.
If Morris proves his selection and performs as per the expectations, he might also get playing time during the regular season, but it is too soon to speculate regarding this development as the Redskins already have a number of players serving at running
back positions and Morris will be initially expected to serve their as their backup.
