Washington Redskins edge past Tampa Bay Buccaneers 24-22 – NFL Recap
Washington Redskins kicker Billy Cundiff missed a few field goal attempts on Sunday, September 30, against Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the kicker was right on the target when it mattered most, leading his team to a victory, 24-22, at Raymond James Stadium.
In the final few seconds of the game when Redskins were trailing by one point, Cundiff succeeded in sending the ball between the uprights on a 41-yard attempt to end his team’s two-game losing streak.
Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) said of Cundiff:
"We all had a feeling he was going to make it, even though the day wasn't so great for him. He came up big when it mattered. ... We all have things that we have to get better at.”
Cundiff said after the game:
“For me, I knew that if I got the chance, no matter how bad I kicked in the game, I knew I would make it. I stayed positive the entire time so that when it did come out, it may not be pretty – it wasn’t the best ball I’ve ever hit – but it went through the
uprights, and we were able to win the game.”
The Bucs did well to stage a comeback during the game after going down earlier. However, they just could not hold on their lead and lost their third straight game. Thanks to the sloppy performances from Carolina Panthers (1-3) and New Orleans Saints (0-4),
the Bucs are still placed at second spot in National Football Conference (NFC) South, behind Atlanta Falcons (4-0).
Tampa Bay got early lead in first quarter after scoring a field goal, but Redskins managed to take the lead away at the end of the quarter as Pierre Garcon recovered a fumble in the end zone.
RG3 managed to rush for five yards to get a touchdown in second quarter to increase the lead, which was further strengthened in the same quarter when Alfred Morris got a 39-yard run for a touchdown.
Tampa Bay scored a field goal in the quarter to enter halftime 15 points behind Redskins.
The Bucs got a touchdown in the third quarter when quarterback Josh Freeman connected with Vincent Jackson on a seven-yard touchdown pass.
Tampa Bay further reduced the deficit when they got another touchdown in the final quarter, thanks to a two-yard run from LeGarrette Blount.
The Bucs continued with the momentum and got a field goal with less than two minutes left in the quarter to come in a dominating position. However, Redskins eventually managed to score a field goal, which was their only scoring move of the second half, and
took the game away.
Redskins are placed at third spot in National Football Conference (NFC) East and they will now take on the undefeated Falcons in Week 5 game while Tampa Bay will have a bye week.
