Washington Redskins get 31-28 overtime victory against Baltimore Ravens – NFL Week 14 Recap
Despite losing their star quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) during the game, Washington Redskins managed to grind out another win after defeating Baltimore Ravens by 31-28 during overtime in Week 14 on Sunday, December 09, 2012, at FedEx Field, Landover,
Maryland.
Redskins now sit just outside the playoff qualification spots as they are ranked seventh in the National Football Conference (NFC) playoff standings with a 7-6 record.
The Redskins continue their remarkable comeback as they won their fourth consecutive game after putting up a miserable 3-6 record before the bye week.
On the other hand, Ravens got another shocking defeat as the team lost its second game in a row for the first time since the 2009 season.
Ravens though are strongly placed in the playoff rankings, standing in fourth place in American Football Conference (AFC) with nine wins and four losses.
Griffin finished the game with 15 of 26 for 246 yards and a touchdown. The rookie was seen limping in the locker room after the victory. He got a knee injury during the game. Talking about the injury, Griffin said:
"I knew I needed to get out at that point. I couldn't move. At some point you have to do what's right for the team. And if I'm playing the rest of that game, I probably would have hurt myself even more."
However, Redskins backup quarterback Kirk Cousins did not let his team down. The rookie played only his second game of the season and stepped up in place of Griffin when Redskins were eight points behind Ravens with a few minutes left in the game.
Cousins went on to score a touchdown as well as a two-point conversion to save Redskins, and took the game to overtime.
Ravens were on the course to clinch AFC North division after quarterback Joe Flacco threw three touchdown passes in the first half, but they failed to retain the lead in the second half. Talking about the team’s performance, running back Ray Rice said:
"As a leader on this team I like to finish teams out. I don't want to be known as, 'Yeah, we get them close in the fourth quarter, and the Ravens are going to give it away.' That's never been us. That's not going to be us."
Redskins got the early lead with a touchdown from Griffin, but Ravens levelled the score with a touchdown from Flacco. Running back Alfred Morris got a one-yard run later on to finish the first quarter with a 14-7 score.
Ravens managed to come back in the second quarter with two touchdowns from Flacco as the first half ended 21-14.
Redskins went on to reduce the lead to just a point in the third quarter with two field goals and ended the quarter at 20-21.
With less than five minutes left in the game, Rice scored a touchdown to give Ravens an eight-point lead, but Cousins levelled the score 28-28 with a touchdown and two-point conversion, taking the game to overtime.
Redskins ended up winning the game with a field goal from Kai Forbath in overtime for a 31-28 victory.
