Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan: Robert Griffin III will run first team’s offence in OTAs
Washington Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, has confirmed that quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), who was selected as second overall pick in the 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft, will run the first team’s offence during the organised team
activities (OTAs).
Shanahan gave these comments while talking to reporters at the end of the team’s minicamp.
RG3 is still learning the team’s playbook and despite mentioning that the quarterback would start the team’s offence during OTAs, Shanahan did not say anything about starting position for the regular season games.
At the moment, RG3 is only training with rookies and his abilities will be put to test during the OTAs in which he will be working out with senior members of the team.
Redskins were able to select RG3 after trading up their sixth overall pick with St. Louis Rams who initially had second overall pick.
Shanahan mentioned the trade and said that he certainly had a game plan in mind before making the trade.
While talking to reporters, he said of RG3:
"He's the starter, period."
Shanahan added:
"With any young quarterback, it is going to take some time. Obviously, any time you pick a player with the second pick of the draft, you have a game plan in mind."
At the moment, Redskins have RG3, Rex Grossman and Kirk Cousins to serve at quarterback positions.
Since it is confirmed that RG3 will be leading the offence during OTAs, Shanahan said that the ground was open for Grossman and Cousins to compete for the second-string quarterback position.
When asked about RG3’s performance during the workout, Shanahan appreciated the rookie’s talent and said that he is adjusting into the system quite nicely.
Shanahan said:
"Robert was able to pick it up the playbook very quickly and show it on the field. We are going to adjust our system to what he feels comfortable with, and we will watch him grow."
He added:
"Everybody talks about his ability to run, but that's because he has Olympic-speed. He is a thrower first, and his other skills fit perfectly to what we do."
Even though Shanahan has not mentioned anything about the team’s regular season plans, it is widely believed that RG3 is going to be their starting quarterback.
