Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan comments on QB Robert Griffin III’s speed – NFL News
Washington Redskins are expecting a turnaround in the upcoming National Football League (NFL) season as they continue the rebuilding phase of the franchise.
They finished the last season with only five victories and lost 11 games to end at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division.
But the arrival of quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) is expected to take the team to new winning heights, or so the overall impression is.
RG3, who was selected as the second overall pick in the 2012 draft, is very quick and speedy – a rare yet commendable quality of any quarterback.
He can take a snap, collect the ball, pass it or run with it and that’s what makes him different from others.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is also aware of this quality and wants to extract all the possible gains out of it.
Mostly, quarterbacks generally throw the ball but some of them like to rush as well (Tim Tebow is a prime example in this case).
Although the Redskins’ playbook does not encourage quarterbacks to rush, RG3’s qualities can be utilised at the time of need to confuse the opponents.
According to the details present on the team’s official website, the coach said of the quarterback:
"You’ve got to account for that speed. We can do some things – if it’s running the option, running the counter option--doing things that are not going to be the staple of your offence--that really dictate what defenses can do and can’t do."
Shanahan added:
"A lot of quarterbacks are just considered runners. Robert has proven that he can drop back and throw with anybody in the National Football League. He has that type of arm strength. Everything else is a progression."
Meanwhile, RG3 has also said that he does not want to be known as the quarterback who only has speed.
Instead, he has set high standards for himself and wants to develop more set of skills to entertain other needs of the team.
He is taking part in the ongoing organised team activities (OTAs) and wants to learn as much as possible before taking the field as the team’s starter in the 2012 season.
