Washington Redskins’ head coach Mike Shanahan fine after collision with players during OTAs–NFL News
The first day of this week’s organised team activities (OTAs) was not very convincing for Washington Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, as he was knocked down on the ground after colliding with defensive back, Brandyn Thompson.
However, the head coach was reportedly fine after the incident.
Even the start of the day did not go as per the team’s plans as light rain forced the management to move players and coaches to the team’s indoor facility for the scheduled training sessions.
Since it is a congested space it was difficult to accommodate plenty of players.
During a 7-on-7 drill with wide receiver, Pierre Garcon, Thompson ran towards the midfield and found Shanahan standing between him and his destination.
A frantic collision took place, leaving the 59-year-old Shanahan on the ground for several minutes.
Linebacker, London Fletcher, told USA TODAY Sports about the collision:
“It was definitely scary. He wasn’t moving for a while there.”
Garcon added:
“Coach even asked who hit him. I was hoping he wasn’t (knocked) out. But you know how that is. It was a scary moment, you just never know.”
Later, a cart came out on the field to take the head coach to the sidelines but he did not use it.
After catching his breath, Shanahan stood up and went to the sidelines from where he monitored the rest of the practice with general manager, Bruce Allen.
Redskins’ rookie quarterback, Robert Griffin III, admired the toughness the head coach had shown. He too was scared initially, but seeing the coach standing on his feet after a few minutes made him feel easy.
The quarterback said of the head coach:
“He showed some toughness, got up, stuck it out. That’s a benchmark of our team. It was pretty scary actually to see two guys running full speed smack dab into your coach.”
Although it was reported that Shanahan was fine after the incident, he did not come out for his scheduled media session after the end of the day’s OTAs.
Redskins’ spokesman informed that the head coach was not in a condition to talk at the podium and that’s why he missed the media session.
Redskins are not going to train on Tuesday and this will give some time to the head coach to take rest, if needed. They have two straight days of practice after Tuesday.
