Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan hopes to improve in second half of season – NFL News
Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan knows his team is in danger and might once again get eliminated after regular season.
Although playoff chances for the Redskins are bleak this season, Shanahan still has some high hopes. He believes that the team can still make the playoffs, but the head coach has maintained that Redskins have to win every game now to secure a playoff berth.
At 3-5, Redskins are placed at the bottom of National Football Conference (NFC) East and are presently on a two-game losing streak with the recent defeats coming against defending Super Bowl champions and current NFC East leaders New York Giants (27-23)
and Pittsburgh Steelers (27-12).
Redskins will play their next game against Carolina Panthers before heading to their bye week and if they do not win against Panthers, the season may well be over for them.
According to The Associated Press, via ESPN, Shanahan said of his team’s chances:
“Everybody knows it's a must-win game when you're 3-5. ... If you have any chance at the playoffs, everybody understands at the midway point that you've got to start playing your best football or you're eliminated awful quick.”
Redskins could easily blame their defence for their slump this season. The defence was supposed to be their strength and complement the second overall draft pick of this year, quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3).
However, injuries to some key players of the defensive line have seriously hurt the Redskins’ plans and they seem to be struggling at the moment.
RG3 has played well for the team and created many scoring opportunities, but the Redskins are unable to control the opponents’ offence and that is why they are consistently losing games.
Shanahan is planning on introducing some changes in the squad to get better output. The Redskins head coach said:
"I think we've got some guys playing in a couple of positions that hadn't played there, and we'll work as hard as we can to change it up for the positive. When you do change six, seven people that would normally be dressing, you're not the same team."
