Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan wants Robert Griffin III to go play-by-play during preseason
The fans have waited for so long to see quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) finally representing Washington Redskins on the field and show why he was the second overall pick of this year’s draft.
However, they might have to wait a little more as the Redskins rookie quarterback might not be at his best during the preseason games.
Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan does not expect the rookie to display miracles right from his first appearance for the team. Instead, the head coach has asked him to just make the plays he has learned during the offseason.
According to the details present on the team’s website, Shanahan told RG3:
“Just prepare yourself. Know the plays that are being called and go out there and just concentrate, play-by-play.”
The coach went on:
"Let the plays happen--don't try to make it happen."
Redskins are going to play their first preseason game on August 09 against the Buffalo Bills and it will be RG3’s first chance to demonstrate his true potential.
Meanwhile, the rookie has also implied that he will be careful during the preseason games and adopt a rather cautious approach without being too ambitious. He told reporters:
“A lot of times in practice, you can't really tell, because Coach is making the defenders stop pass rushing. They're not going to hit you in practice, because you want to get those reps that throwing the ball and things of that nature. I'll see whether things
open up a lot more with the pass rush or whether things get clogged up a lot more. It'll be interesting to see what happens.”
Redskins are going to play total of four preseason games before starting their regular season campaign against New Orleans Saints on September 09.
Shanahan’s approach towards utilising RG3 in the preseason games seems sensible as even though the quarterback has a great reputation he still needs to get the taste of the professional environment.
The preseason games will help him understand the actual nature of the game as he will be playing against the league teams for the first time. He must get well acquainted with the system so as to give better output in the regular season.
