Washington Redskins officially draft Robert Griffin III – NFL News
The months of hype and drama are finally over as the Washington Redskins finally selected former Baylor’s quarterback, Robert Griffin III (RG3), as the second overall pick in the first round of 2012 National Football League (NFL) draft on Thursday, April
26, 2012.
It was widely believed that Redskins would select RG3 and with the confirmation from Indianapolis Colts, who had the first overall pick, that they would draft Stanford’s Andrew Luck, it became certain that RG3 will head to Washington.
On the draft day, NFL commissioner, Roger Goodell, announced the pick and handed over the Redskins’ jersey to the franchise’s new quarterback.
RG3 was jubilant on the draft day and after being selected, he had this message for other youngsters:
“Go catch that dream because a lot of times when you chase something you never get to it. So if you say, `Hey, I'm going to go catch my dream,' you're already telling yourself that you're going to get it."
Meanwhile, Redskins have hoped that the fresh acquisition will help the team’s cause of winning the NFL title in the next season.
In the last season, Redskins performed miserably and won only five games. They lost 11 games and ended up at the bottom of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division without qualifying for the playoffs.
Redskins’ head coach, Mike Shanahan, thinks that RG3 has the potential to lead the team to winning more games in the next season.
However, the coach also admitted that a single player cannot fulfil the team’s cause all alone. He will need support from other players to be successful.
Shanahan said:
"You're always looking for that franchise guy. And that term is used without him proving himself yet -- we understand that. But he's got everything that you look for in a quarterback. Hopefully we can get the supporting cast around him and start playing
very well."
After the end of the last season, Redskins earned a sixth overall pick for the first round of the draft, but they traded it with St. Louis Rams, who had the second overall pick, to move up and get the chance to select RG3.
